If you are having a mosey around Derbyshire, then these local bookstores are a must-visit! You’ll never run out of books or films to read and watch with such a huge choice. Why not make a day of it and visit them all? Or visit with the kids during the summer holidays?

If you want to find the perfect books to read and relax with during these summery days; then this blog will surely give you some great ideas on where to drop by.  These shops are listed in no particular order. If you’ve made your way through this list, then check out five more Incredible Independent Derbyshire bookshops we love.

1.     Hawkridge Books

 Location: 14 Matlock Street, Bakewell. DE45 1EE

This beautiful bookshop is owned and run by two amazing people: Irene and Joe Tierney. Bakewell’s bookshop specialises in ornithology, in which they provide over 1100 volumes! The owners keep books on all subjects and have a range of selections for you to feast your eyes on. The interior is vintage, welcoming, and spacious. All books are on the first floor and the second floor! So, the fun never ends.

If you are into looking through a vintage store that holds antique books, this place is for you! Including 700 books which are published by the Folio Society, which creates beautiful, illustrated books. The range even goes to 200 books about Derbyshire. What better way to spend your day in Bakewell than visiting an antique bookstore with plenty of information on Derbyshire?

2.     Reading Matters Bookshop

 Location: 48 Market Street, Chapel-en-le-Frith, High Peak. SK23 0HY

If you plan to visit the High Peak, be sure to visit this independent bookshop which was established in 2012. It holds a wide range of books, from non-fiction to local guides for walkers and cyclists. If you have children, this shop has a children’s corner that provides a wonderful selection of fiction through to factual books. Although this is a bookshop, you may enjoy finding a film to watch when you get home. They sell all sorts of films and music in different formats, ranging from vinyl, CDs, and Blu-ray.

Another great thing about this beautiful place is that they hold book signings and talks! So, you may come across a great author. You can also bring your dogs! Why not even stay for a coffee whilst on your trip? 

3.     George St Community Bookshop

Location: 14-16 George Street, Glossop. SK13 8AY

This large, beautiful house-like bookshop established in 2018, is a must-visit. Both in-person and online! If you are into listening to podcasts, then this bookshop website is just for you. Regularly posting, George St Bookshop holds podcasts discussing a wide selection of amazing books. Glossop is always a beautiful place to visit, so why not head down to this second-hand bookstore on your way through?

This antique bookstore sells second-hand books from collectables to children's literature. With a great variety of classics, crime, history and even thrillers, there will always be a book you’ll enjoy.  

4.     National Trust, Kedleston Hall

Location:  Kedleston Hall, Derby. DE22 5JH

This gorgeous bookshop sells second-hand books at the stunning Kedleston Hall. When having a casual walk-through, be sure to pop into the bookstore which is located beside the Eastern Museum.

All of the books are donated by locals, visitors, and supporters. The books donated are in great condition, so you won’t need to worry about loose pages, just well-loved books. Not only does this bookshop sell books, but also maps, vintage national trust guides, and sheet music! If you are in need of finding sheet music, then you are in luck at Kedleston Hall, as the shelves are restocked every week.

Thankfully, the bookshop is run by enthusiastic volunteers who are always in need of donated books. So, if you are planning on taking a wondrous trip to Kedleston Hall, and have used books you no longer need, make your way down to the bookshop and hand them over! The friendly team are always happy to take these off your hands. Not only will you be doing a huge favour by donating to the bookshop, but these donations go towards looking after Kedleston Hall and its parklands.

5. Dormouse Books 

Location: 36 Market Pl, Belper DE56 1FZ

Dormouse Books is an independent bookshop in Belper whose main aim is to nurture the next generation of readers. The quirky bookstore not only offers an incredible range of books, but you’ll find cool displays and lots of unique treasures. Be sure to add this bookstore to your list!
